Breath Not So Fresh? Here’s How To Fix It

You hate to admit it, but your breath doesn’t seem very fresh and clean these days. You’re not sure how it happened, but here you are. You’ve somehow become the person with bad breath—and you have no idea how to fix it.
Nobody wants to be the person with bad breath. So we asked Dr. Mitesh Dhulab of Idlewild Family Dentistry, a state-of-the-art cosmetic and family dental practice in Matthews NC, how to combat frequent bad breath.

Here are six tips he has shared, to help you get your mouth fresh and clean.

1. Brush And Floss Regularly. If you’re not brushing and flossing enough, that means plaque is building up on your teeth. Plaque collects bacteria that leads to bad breath, and if there’s any trapped food in your teeth, that just makes it worse. Make sure you brush and floss at least twice a day. If you still feel like your breath isn’t so fresh, don’t be afraid to brush and floss more often.
2. Watch What You Eat. We all know there are certain foods that leave our breath smelling, well, bad. Foods, like onions and garlic, are some of the main culprits. Think the smell will go away after you brush? Think again. The pungent enzymes that cause these smells actually work their way into your bloodstream and travel to your lungs until you eventually breathe them out. So, if you want to avoid the harsh smells these foods bring, just don’t eat them right before you’re spending quality time with family and friends.
3. Chew Sugar-Free Gum. When people are worried about their breath, they usually grab a mint or two to cover up the smelly food they had for dinner. The problem? The bacteria in your mouth “feeds” off of sugar—which is found in these mints—to make acid. The acid contributes to both tooth decay and gingivitis, both of which can cause bad breath. Chewing sugarless gum after eating increases the flow of saliva in your mouth, which can help neutralize the acids that are produced when food is broken down by the bacteria that is found in plaque. It also makes your mouth feel minty and clean after a meal.
4. Use A Tongue Cleaner. In addition to using a toothbrush to clean your teeth, you can improve the freshness of your mouth by using a tongue cleaner. These can be found in drugstores in various shapes and sizes. You can use a tongue cleaner to remove odor causing bacteria, food debris and dead cells that you missed with brushing. Using this tool can often be a helpful solution when dealing with halitosis.
5. Rinse. If you want fresh breath, don’t forget the mouthwash. Mouthwash helps to get rid of the food particles and bacteria that is causing your bad breath. You’ll also find it leaving your mouth feeling fresh and clean. Keep a small bottle of mouthwash in your purse or car for a quick rinse after meals. When choosing a mouthwash, make sure you opt for one that kills germs.
6. Keep Your Mouth Moist. If you are unable to produce enough saliva in your mouth, it can not only lead to bad breath, it can also lead to tooth decay. If you’ve noticed that your mouth is a little dry lately, start drinking more water. Sucking on sugar-free hard candy and chewing sugarless gum can also help.

Bad breath can be embarrassing, but following these tips will help you keep it under control. If you’ve already tried everything on this list to fight bad breath and nothing seems to work, talk to your dentist. You may have a more serious condition that needs further treatment.

Overweight problems resulting from bad eating patterns can be avoided by using simple suggestions that leading nutritionists have developed. Here are some top eating healthy tips that you should not ignore.

1. Eat a lot of Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are rich in minerals and nutrients that are important for healthy living. Vegetables such as carrots and homemade tomato sauce provide instant sources of nutrients that are responsible for improved mental and physical performance. Most vegetables also contain roughages that enhance effective digestion in the intestines. It is, therefore, important that your diet should contain a lot of fruits and vegetables.

2. Give Preference to More Starchy Foods

Starchy foods such as bread, potatoes rice and noodles contain fewer calories of fat per gram in comparison to other food varieties. This, therefore, makes them naturally effective for development of a healthy body. Starchy foods also contain fiber, minerals and vitamins that your body needs for day to day functions. A balanced food diet should not fail to contain starchy food products.

3. Drink More Water

Water is important for hydrating the body after long hours of working. Adults should aim for at least 8 glasses of water per day. The daily intake should also not exceed 10 glasses. Exceeding this amount can cause health problems to your kidneys, sweating glands and other important organs that are used in regulating the amount of fluids in our bodies. Water does not add any calories to your daily intake and, therefore, is a perfect fluid to take in large quantities as recommended by nutritionists. Water also has direct effects on your mood. Human bodies are 70% water. This means most of our body systems require an adequate supply of water to perform efficiently.

4. Eat More Fish

Oily fish such as salmon, fresh tuna and sardines are some of the few natural sources of vitamin D that is vital for the development of healthy bones. Since the human body is principally made up of a skeleton frame with flesh and organs patching up the structure, it is always important to have strong healthy bones. You should, at least, take 280g of fish portions in a week to remain healthy for long.

5. Eat Less Salt

Although salt is important for healthy living, adding too much salt in your food can cause serious health conditions such as High Blood Pressure. It is recommended that your daily salt intake should not exceed 6g per day for adults and even less for children. Try using natural herbs, vinegar products, spices and mustard to add flavor to your food. If possible, ensure that you read all product labels of foods you buy to ensure that they have low salt content. Having more than 0.6g of sodium content in a 100g food product can cause harm to your health.

Lastly, remember to adapt to healthy eating habits. For example, you should not skip breakfasts as a way of controlling your body weight. Taking a healthy breakfast with wholegrain cereals, fruits, and wholemeal toast can help you a lot in living healthy as opposed to skipping breakfast in general.
